OACS Student Technician Position Availability:

The Office of Academic Computing Services has an ongoing recruitment for student technicians; this recruitment is available to undergraduate students only.

The OACS User Support Technician is responsible for ensuring that faculty, staff, and graduate students in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) at the University of Maryland are able to connect to and use the BSOS network and its related services. Common technician tasks include troubleshooting hardware and software problems, installing network software and hardware, upgrading computers and printers, and other network support. The primary duties for this position are divided among two roles: IT Help Desk Support and Computer Lab Support.

Description of Primary Duties:

  • IT Help Desk Support primary duties include but are not limited to triaging incoming service requests via phone and email, tracking of service requests via a ticketing system, answering questions regarding OACS services, providing basic over-the-phone/remote session support to BSOS faculty and staff, and transferring calls to the appropriate jurisdictions.
  • Computer Lab Support primary duties include but are not limited to assisting users with general computer use (workstation login, launching provided software, printing, internet access), WEPA kiosk issues (paper low/out, toner low/out, non-responsive)and remote sessions.

  • Microsoft Windows (10 and higher)
  • Microsoft Office (2016 and higher)
  • MAC OS  (High Sierra and higher)
  • Google Apps for Education (GAFE)
  • Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
  • Smartphone Apps (related to campus Wi-Fi and email)
  • FTP and VPN Clients
  • Various statistical software (maintenance and installation only, not usage)

Training and instruction will be provided for the supported technology.

Qualifications:

  • Basic PC hardware / software knowledge

A problem solving attitude / the desire to ensure customer satisfaction as well as top notch customer service is required for this position.

Salary / Hours:

  • $15.00 p/h
  • 12-20hrs per week with the opportunity for additional hours, if desired
